Mammography

Screening Mammography

Screening mammography is recommended annually for all asymptomatic women 40 years and over. Patients with breast implants may also receive screening mammograms; however a few additional views, which temporarily displace the implant out of view to better visualize the breast tissue, are necessary. While screening mammograms may be performed during any phase of the menstrual cycle, we encourage women who experience premenstrual breast pain to obtain their examinations during the first half of the menstrual cycle to minimize any further discomfort. As an additional precaution, please do not use underarm deodorant the day of the exam so that clear images may be obtained. There are no dietary or medicinal restrictions prior to the examination. An official report of the mammogram will be sent to your doctor, and results will also be sent to you.

Diagnostic Mammography

Diagnostic mammograms are performed to address specific concerns, such as palpable breast lump or possible abnormality noted on a screening exam. Diagnostic evaluations usually entail additional specialized views and, in some cases, a breast ultrasound. The results of your diagnostic exam are usually available immediately following the study. As in the case of screening mammograms, an official report will be sent to your doctor.

Breast Ultrasound

The examination is often used to obtain additional information about an abnormality detected mammographically such as whether a mass represents a solid growth or cyst. The results of this exam are usually included in the mammogram report. Sonographers certified by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers perform breast ultrasound at all facilities where Radiology Alliance provides interpretations.

Radiology Alliance’s Breast Imaging Practice

Radiology Alliance has a long tradition of providing quality breast imaging services in Middle Tennessee and a commitment to treating patients with dignity and compassion. Our practice provides services at dedicated breast centers, accredited by the American College of Radiology, including HealthSouth Diagnostic Center and comprehensive centers at Baptist Hospital, Centennial Medical Center and St. Thomas Hospital. These facilities are staffed by board certified radiologists and by technologists certified in mammography who have also met MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) requirements. Registered nurses at each center assist in patient education such as demonstrating to patients how to perform breast self-examinations. A full spectrum of breast imaging is offered at each facility, including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, cyst aspiration, and core biopsies. Minimally invasive procedures such as stereotactic and ultrasound guided Mammotome or core needle biopsies are available as well.
